These Terms in Plain Language
This section explains the terms above in everyday language and answers the questions customers ask us most often. It is a guide, not a separate agreement. If anything here seems different from the terms above or from your written estimate, the terms and your written estimate control, and you can call us at (615) 710-9990 to clear it up before your move.
How your price is set
For local moves, JM Moving charges by the hour: $250 per hour for two movers and a truck, or $350 per hour for three movers and a truck. On local moves we do not add charges for travel time, fuel, elevators or one flight of stairs. For whole-home moves and long-distance moves, we usually set one flat rate. Before a flat rate is final, we do a walkthrough of the home, in person or by video, and then confirm the price with you on a call. The flat rate is based on what we saw and what you told us about the move, so a complete walkthrough is the best way to make sure the price stays the same on move day.
Why a price can change
A price changes only when the move changes. The most common reasons are furniture or rooms that were not included in the walkthrough, an extra stop such as a storage unit, boxes that were not packed when the crew arrived, or access that is different from what was described, such as an elevator that is not available or a truck that cannot reach the home. If something like this happens, we explain it to you before any additional work is done, so you can decide how to proceed.
What we ask of you
- Give us an accurate inventory and tell us about anything heavy, fragile or high-value, such as pianos, safes, art, antiques and glass.
- Tell us about stairs, elevators, long walks, gates and parking at both addresses.
- Reserve elevators and loading areas with your buildings and share any building or HOA rules with us, including certificate of insurance requirements.
- Have boxes packed and sealed before the crew arrives unless you have booked packing service.
- Empty drawers of fragile, valuable or heavy items, and remove items you do not want moved.
- Be present, or have someone present who can make decisions, at both the pickup and the delivery.
- Keep money, jewelry, medications, important documents and other irreplaceable small items with you.
Items we cannot load
For safety and legal reasons, some items cannot travel on a moving truck. These generally include gasoline and other fuels, propane tanks, paint, paint thinner and solvents, cleaning chemicals, pool chemicals, fertilizer, pesticides, aerosols, fireworks, ammunition, and anything flammable, corrosive or explosive. Perishable food, live plants on long-distance moves, and pets also should not go on the truck. Firearms should be unloaded and transported by the owner. If you are unsure about an item, ask before move day.
How we protect your home and belongings
Before any furniture moves, our crew puts down floor runners and installs door-jamb pads, corner guards and banister covers along the route. Furniture is wrapped in moving blankets, and standard furniture is taken apart and put back together as needed. For art, pianos, safes and other high-value items, our crew writes down the condition before the move. Mirrors and framed art can be custom crated.
Valuation and coverage
Movers provide valuation, which is the level of responsibility the mover accepts for your belongings. For interstate moves, federal rules require movers to offer two options: released value protection, which is included at no additional charge but is limited to 60 cents per pound per item, and full value protection, under which the mover is responsible for repairing or replacing lost or damaged items or paying their current value, subject to the terms and any declared value. Coverage for moves within Tennessee may be different, so ask us what applies to your move and get it in writing. You may also want to check whether your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers your belongings during a move.
Inspecting and reporting damage
When your belongings are delivered, look over the furniture and boxes, especially high-value items, before the crew leaves if you can. If you see damage or a missing item, tell the crew leader and call us as soon as possible. Keep the damaged item and any packing material, and take photos. For interstate moves, federal rules generally give you nine months from delivery to file a written claim with the mover. Reporting problems promptly makes them easier to resolve for everyone.
Interstate moves and your rights
If you are moving between states, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires movers to give you certain information, including a booklet about your rights and responsibilities when you move. Read it before move day. You can also find information about interstate moving rights on the FMCSA’s Protect Your Move website. Keep your estimate, bill of lading and inventory together until the move is complete and any questions are settled.
Scheduling, changes and weather
JM Moving works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so many schedule changes can be handled with a phone call. If your closing, lease or building reservation changes, call us as soon as you know. Our crews will not work in conditions that are unsafe for people or property, such as icy steps, lightning or flooded driveways. In those cases we will work with you to adjust the timing.
Payment
We accept Zelle, Venmo and credit cards. The amount due and the payment schedule are confirmed with you before the move. You will receive a written record of your payment.
Questions
If you have any question about these terms or your estimate, call JM Moving at (615) 710-9990 or write to us at 6430 Charlotte Pike, Suite 107, Nashville, TN 37209. We would rather answer a question before your move than after it.
A Short Glossary of Moving Terms
Moving paperwork uses words that most people only see once every few years. These are the ones you are most likely to come across.
- Estimate: the mover’s written statement of the expected cost of the move, based on the inventory and access information provided.
- Flat rate: one agreed price for a defined scope of work, such as moving a specific home’s contents from one address to another.
- Hourly rate: a price per hour for a crew and truck. At JM Moving, local hourly rates are $250 for two movers and a truck and $350 for three movers and a truck.
- Binding estimate: on interstate moves, an estimate that sets the price for the services listed, as long as the shipment and services do not change.
- Non-binding estimate: on interstate moves, an estimate of probable cost where the final charge depends on the actual weight and services.
- Bill of lading: the receipt and contract for transporting your household goods. Read it before you sign it, and keep a copy.
- Inventory: the list of items being moved, sometimes noting their condition. Check it carefully at pickup and delivery.
- Valuation: the level of the mover’s responsibility for loss or damage, which is different from insurance.
- Released value protection: the basic level of valuation on interstate moves, limited to 60 cents per pound per item.
- Full value protection: a higher level of valuation under which the mover repairs, replaces or pays for lost or damaged items, subject to its terms.
- Accessorial services: extra services beyond loading, transport and unloading, such as packing, crating or storage.
- Long carry: an unusually long distance between the truck and the door, which can add time.
- Shuttle: a smaller vehicle used when a large truck cannot reach the home.
- Storage in transit: temporary storage of your belongings between pickup and delivery.
- Certificate of insurance: a document some buildings require from movers before allowing a move, naming the building’s association or management company.
- USDOT number: the identification number the federal government assigns to interstate carriers. You can look it up on the FMCSA website.
Frequently Asked Questions About These Terms
Do I have to sign anything before the move? You will receive written confirmation of your move and its price. On interstate moves, you will also receive the documents federal rules require, including the bill of lading. Read each one before you sign.
What if I need to cancel or move my date? Call us as early as possible at (615) 710-9990. The terms above explain how booking and cancellations are handled, and we will work with you on a new date whenever we can.
Can I pack some things myself? Yes. Many customers pack their own boxes and have us pack fragile items or the kitchen. Boxes you pack yourself should be sealed and labeled, and fragile items should be packed with plenty of paper.
Will the crew take apart and reassemble furniture? Yes, standard furniture such as beds and tables is taken apart and reassembled as part of the move. Items that need special tools or professional service, such as some wall units or gym equipment, should be discussed before move day.
What if my building has rules for movers? Send them to us before move day. We will follow them and provide a certificate of insurance when the building requires one.
Who do I call with a problem after the move? Call us first, any hour, at (615) 710-9990.
How a Local Move Works, Step by Step
- Request: you call (615) 710-9990 or send a request through the website with your addresses, date and the size of the move. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Walkthrough: for whole-home moves, we look at the home in person or by video so the price reflects the real inventory and access.
- Price confirmation: we confirm the hourly rate or the flat rate with you on a call, along with the date, arrival time and crew size.
- Preparation: you reserve elevators or loading areas, finish packing and set aside the items you will carry yourself. We provide any certificate of insurance your building requires.
- Move day: the crew leader walks the home with you, the crew protects floors, doors and banisters, wraps the furniture and loads the truck.
- Delivery: furniture and boxes are placed in the rooms you choose, beds and tables are reassembled, and protection is removed.
- Final check and payment: you walk the home with the crew leader, confirm everything is in place and pay the confirmed amount by Zelle, Venmo or card.
Long-Distance Moves Under These Terms
Long-distance moves follow the same steps, with a flat rate set after the walkthrough and a delivery date confirmed when you book. JM Moving runs regular long-distance routes between Nashville and Miami, Augusta and Boston, and long-distance flat rates start from $2,500 door to door. For moves that cross state lines, the federal documents and rights described above apply, and we encourage you to read them before move day.
Moves Into Buildings and HOA Communities
Condo buildings, apartment communities and HOAs often have their own rules for moves: reserved elevator times, loading-dock schedules, protection requirements, quiet hours and certificates of insurance. These rules are part of planning your move. Share them with us as early as possible. If a building’s rules limit the time available, we may recommend a larger crew so the move fits inside the window, and we will explain that recommendation before you book.
Specialty Items and Extra Services
Pianos, safes, pool tables, hot tubs, large artwork and antiques need more planning than standard furniture. Tell us about them before your price is confirmed, so the crew size, equipment and protection are part of the plan. Packing, custom crating and storage are available when you want them and are confirmed with you before the move. Items that require a licensed professional to disconnect or reconnect, such as gas appliances, hot tub electrical, water lines and wall-mounted electronics, should be handled by that professional before or after the crew’s work.
Our Commitment to You
JM Moving has more than 23 years of experience in the moving business, with our own crews and trucks. We want every customer to know the price before the move, see their home protected during it, and have their belongings placed where they want them at the end. If we ever fall short of that, call us at (615) 710-9990 so we can make it right.
